‘A little bit closer to the ground?’ Margery said out loud.

Clementine took the letter back and began to read the ending paragraph.

Margery couldn’t work out what he had meant by that phrase. Did the shop have some sort of secret basement that would contain the means to open the safe? It couldn’t possibly have a basement – if it ever had one, it must have been filled in a long time ago. The entire area was a flood risk, which made basements a very risky proposition. It hadn’t flooded for quite some time, since the river defences had been put in, but she remembered as a child walking past all the shops with their sandbags propped against the doors outside.

The only place she knew that still had a basement was the Bell and Hope pub. But she was sure that she had heard that there was substantial water damage to it going back centuries that each subsequent landlord would patch up with new plaster. It was an entire conversational point in the lower half of Dewstow. When Seren had tried to get insurance for her house by the river, she had needed to pay for special flood coverage that had cost more than all her new furniture put together. The dinner ladies still talked about it sometimes and it had been well over a year since Seren moved in.

Clementine’s phone bleeped and she groaned, looking over at it. ‘For God’s sake, why does Maria only message at stupid times in the morning? I know France is an hour ahead, but really!’

Margery shook her head; she didn’t know why Clementine’s sister did anything and she didn’t hold much hope in ever finding out. She reached down to give Jason a gentle pat on the head where he sat by her feet. Her brain snapped awake as soon as she touched the soft leather collar around his neck. She snatched her hand back as if it had burnt her. Jason flinched in surprise.

‘Sorry,’ she whispered to the dog, who settled down again by her feet. Pumpkin watched them both with great interest from the top of the chest of drawers.

‘Clem,’ Margery said. ‘What do you think he meant by “a collar-full”?’

‘No idea,’ Clementine said, dropping her phone on the duvet cover so she could rub her eyes again. ‘Probably something mad and strange.’

Margery reached out her hand again and had a better look at the collar around Jason’s neck. It wasn’t the one that he always used to wear, the glittery diamanté thing that Ceri-Ann had made years before. This collar was dreadfully plain in comparison. Margery hadn’t even really noticed with all the other things that were going on; perhaps her brain had just stupidly assumed that Jason was in mourning so of course he’d wear a plain collar. She reached for the safety clasp on the back of it and undid it, sliding it off his neck. Clementine would have told him he was naked if she wasn’t so tired, Margery thought stupidly, holding the collar up to look for any discrepancies.
